1. Proxy basics in 60 seconds
A proxy is a middleman server. When you route a request through it, the destination website sees the proxy's IP address and location instead of yours. That lets you appear to browse from a different place, spread requests across many addresses so you don't get rate-limited, and keep your own identity separate from your activity.

2. The four proxy types compared
There are four mainstream proxy types. Each makes a different trade-off between cost, speed, and how convincingly "human" the IP looks to a target website.
Residential proxies
These use IP addresses that real ISPs have assigned to real homes. Because the traffic looks like an ordinary person browsing from their living room, residential IPs are the hardest to detect and block. They're the go-to for serious web scraping, ad verification and any well-defended target. The downside is cost: you typically pay per gigabyte of traffic, and that adds up at scale.
Datacenter proxies
These IPs come from servers in data centers rather than homes. They're extremely fast and cheap, often sold per IP rather than per GB. The catch is that they share recognisable address ranges, so sophisticated sites can spot and block them more easily. For high-volume work against sites that don't fight back hard, they're unbeatable on price-per-request.
ISP (static residential) proxies
A clever hybrid. ISP proxies are residential IPs hosted on data-center hardware, so you get a residential address's trustworthiness plus the speed and permanence of a fixed IP. Use them when you need the same legitimate-looking IP to stay live for hours or days — account management and continuous monitoring are classic examples.
Mobile proxies
These route through real 4G/5G cellular networks. Because carriers constantly recycle a small pool of mobile IPs among thousands of subscribers, blocking a mobile IP risks blocking lots of innocent users — so sites treat them as highly trustworthy. They're the most expensive type, but essential for mobile-first platforms and the toughest social tasks.
3. Rotating vs sticky sessions
Independent of type, you'll choose how IPs behave over time:
- Rotating proxies give you a different IP on every request (or every few minutes). Perfect for scraping lots of pages quickly without any one IP drawing attention.
- Sticky (static) sessions keep the same IP for a set period — a few minutes up to an hour or more. Essential when you need continuity, like staying logged into an account or completing a multi-step checkout.
Good providers let you toggle between the two and set the session length, so you're not locked into one behaviour.
4. Understanding proxy pricing
Proxy pricing is deliberately tricky to compare. Watch for these factors:
- Per-GB vs per-IP. Residential and mobile are usually billed per gigabyte of traffic; datacenter and ISP are often billed per IP per month. Work out which model suits your usage pattern.
- Monthly minimums. Some networks force a minimum monthly spend. If your usage is light or spiky, look for true pay-as-you-go.
- Traffic expiry. Prepaid bandwidth that expires at month-end can quietly waste money. Non-expiring data is far friendlier.
- Volume discounts. The per-GB rate usually drops sharply at higher tiers — so the "starting price" can be misleading.

7. Common mistakes to avoid
- Using free public proxies for real work. They're slow, unreliable and often insecure. Fine for a quick experiment, dangerous for anything that matters.
- Over-buying. Don't pay for mobile or residential when fast datacenter IPs would succeed. Test the cheap option first.
- Ignoring expiry and minimums. The headline price means little if half your data evaporates at month-end.
- Skipping the trial. Always benchmark on your targets — performance varies hugely by site.
- Chasing only the biggest pool. A clean, well-targeted mid-size pool often beats a huge but tired one.
